OPEN TALK: Building Open Source Communities at AWS Serverless
Serverless services like AWS Lambda allow developers to build and run applications without thinking about servers. In 2016, we released an open specification called Serverless Application Model (SAM), a simple configuration file to define Lambda functions and other serverless resources. Since then we have open sourced the underlying implementation of SAM and several other tools to simplify the process of building serverless applications, including SAM CLI, a popular CLI tool to run SAM-based applications on a local computer before deploying to the cloud. In this talk, we will touch upon the story of open sourcing the SAM toolset. The talk will deep dive into how an open specification has kindled and nurtured an ecosystem of open source projects comprising of serverless examples, reference architectures, libraries, CLIs and plugins.

OPEN TALK: Build HQ Trivia (Better Than HQ)
Streaming live video at low latency with user-interaction laid on top is hard, but it's about to get a lot easier with standards-based approaches and existing network technology. A lot of app developers right now are taking cues from HQ Trivia and adding the ability for viewers to interact with live streamers in relative real-time, through chat, answering questions, betting, bidding, and more. They are all currently running into the same challenge of bringing the latency of live streaming video down, while syncing up interactions between the live streamer and thousands of viewers. There is currently a race between WebRTC-based approaches which are very low in latency but hard to scale, and HTTP-based approaches which are easy to scale but higher in latency. Neither are great. In this session I’ll speak to the different approaches available and the standards-based approaches that will soon help solve the issue using technologies that are already available to us.

OPEN TALK: Steel Thread Approach to Building Large Scale Architectures
This talk describes the journey of building a brand new, platform-first, microservices architecture at Box. Building a new architectural stack presents a bunch of challenges with design choices, technology selection, and balancing simplicity with richness of feature offerings. A 'steel thread' to designing architectures helps identify the critical components of the stack and then gradually roll out incremental features - all while the engine is still running. The challenges really snowball when you on-board live traffic with high scale, high throughput and low latency requirements. The talk aims to share a structure on how to approach building large scale microservices architectures, challenges faced while on-boarding live traffic and finally lessons learnt while doing it.

OPEN TALK: Democratize Serverless Platform with Knative
The evolution of Public Cloud Platforms made infrastructure provisioning and delivery of applications/services faster than ever before. Applications are traditionally deployed on compute instances and offers full control of infrastructure. However, teams are indebted to maintain/rehydrate instances in addition to paying full usage of resources in spite of low utilization. On the other hand, Cloud vendor’s serverless platform such as AWS Lambda has created huge buzz lately however it is good for trivial applications (small workloads) and often requires massive redesign for porting existing applications. Though the vendor’s serverless platform charges only for the usage of resources, it creates a vendor lock-in when build and design applications tailored made to run on the platform. In parallel, Kubernetes (K8s) emerged as the first choice container orchestration cluster solution. It is matured, cloud-agnostic, battle-tested and planet-scale platform, born out of 15 years of Google’s experience of running production workloads. While k8s opened up an array of new possibilities of managing applications, we are yet again surprised with Knative, open source serverless add-on, run atop of K8s. In this technical session, demonstrates application deployment simplified through Knative, abstracting physical infrastructure details from users. The k8s cluster nodes spread across cloud platforms (AWS, GKE, Azure) will be used for the demo which ensures no vendor lock-in and proves any containerized application can be deployed on a shared infrastructure yet isolated by namespace and promotes optimal resource utilization. Also, the session deep dive into Knative ecosystem and how to leverage built-in support for metric collection, log monitoring and distributed tracing in no extra time.

OPEN TALK: Blockchain as a Service at Scale
Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) is quickly becoming the preferred business model for blockchain providers and customers. Dragonchain, a Seattle-based blockchain company, helps enterprises build solutions quickly on most secure, scalable, and business-ready public/private hybrid blockchain platform.

Making information immutable and working with a public blockchain can be difficult. Two of the biggest challenges we have heard from developers are “I don’t want to learn a new language” and “we want to move faster.” In this session, we will explore how Dragonchain uses Kubernetes, AWS-S3, Docker, and OpenFaas to run faster, cheaper, and in any programming language you can put in a container. This presentation will explain how to run untrusted code in production, segregate customer traffic, authenticate node traffic with async cryptography, and ensure a customer’s blockchain scales with their needs.
